FISHERMAN IN CALIFORNIA IS CANNIBAL, HE TELLS POLICE

Adrift at. Sea, He. Eats Flesh of Dead Companion

FINALLY RESCUED

Partner Had Gone Crazy and Died of Exhaustion,

AVALON, Santa, Catalina Island,- Calif., Dec. 20.¿ (By The Associated Press.)¿

The startling admission that he had eaten the flesh of his dead companion whom he survived when the two were cast adrift at sea in an open boat was made here last night by Eli B. Kelly, 60, Redondo fisherman.

Kelly was picked up on . the beach near here yesterday and brought to a hospital after drifting for 11 days.

The mutilated body of his companion, James McKinley, 62, was found in the bottom of a small fishing yawl off the end of the island.

Constable Moricich said Kelly confessed to having carved the flesh, away with a bait knife after his companion had died in the open boat and he himself was facing- starvation. After finally reaching land,Kelly said-his last effort to sustain life was to eat cactus.

CRAZED BY HUNGER.

Kelly said he had been without food or water for eight days. His shipmate, crazed by hunger and thirst when supplies ran out, died from exhaustion. after having jumped overboard three times. Kelly said he rescued his companion, each time.

According to Kelly's story the two men set out on a fishing cruise from Redondo, December 8, in 'a.20-foot yawl. On the second night out they ran into a storm which stripped their mainsail and swamped their auxiliary engine.

Manning their oars they struggled against the storm which carried them far out to sea. With provisions for only 24 hours they nibbled sparingly at the dwindling rations.

THEY QUARRELED.

After being-tossed about on the waves for two days, McKinley became insane. Pointing to imaginare headlands he demanded that they pull oars for shore. A quarrel sprang up when Kelly persisted in following his compass.

On the third night, McKinley, crazed by hunger and thirst again took up the quarrel and suddenly lurched at his companion with a bait knife in his hand. Kelly overpowered him and bound him with the stern sheet. Even in this position McKinley could not be subdued and three times he rolled hinfself over the gunwales and plunged into the sea.

EATS HUMAN FLESH.

Three times Kelly rescued him. Finally McKinley died from exhaustion.

With his dead companion at his back Kelly returned to his oars. On the fifth day the last, crumb of food had been eaten. It was then that he attempted to appease his gnawing hunger with human flesh. He sighted land yesterday and reaching this island, crawled on the beach. Dragging

his tarpaulins after him he used these and a few sacks as a covering from scavengers and lay down to die. He was found by fishermen.

M'KINLEY'S DEATH TO BE INVESTIGATED

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21¿Inquest into the death of James McKinley, 63, fisherman, will be ordered by Deputy District Attorney Ellis Eagan, it was announced here this afternoon. McKinley was a victim of tragedy in which he and Ely Kelley, 69, battled for 10 days against hunger and thirst in a disabled boat off Catalina island. Kelley, survivor of the terrible adventure, was finally cast ashore on Catalina island in his helpless boat.

In announcing that he would order an inquest Eagan was careful to state that it was only because of the unusual circumstances that an inquiry would be made.

Eagan's announcement followed the findings by Deputy Autopsy Surgeon Frank R. Webb of finger prints on the throat of the dead mariner. Webb also said there were knife wounds in McKinley's neck and hips. Kelley had explained that he and McKinley fought fiercely when McKinley became crazed with starvation and exposure and he fought him off with a knife.
