I believe my grandmother, her mother and either her father or grandfather (who later returned to Flores), emigrated in 1892 or thereabouts. They immigrated to Massachusetts, either Boston or New Bedford. My grandmother married my grandfather, Jose Toste de Ignacio, who was from Terceira around 1895 and they had three daughters. One was born in Mass, my mother and her other sister were born in Providence, RI. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1912.

Notes for Françisco Maurício de Fraga
Franciso jumped ship in San Francisco and entered the US without papers. He later reported entering in 1878 and became a naturalized citizen.
In 1900 Frank M. Fraga (born Dec 1860) was a sheep raiser in Modesto, Modesto Township, Stanislaus Co., CA (page 134) with his wife Lucy F. (Mar 1875) and children Lena, Frank, and Lucy. Daughter Lena was shown as born in CA. They reported having only 3 children, all living. In 1910 Frank W. Frago was a general farmer living alone in Township 4, Fresno Co., CA; he reported being married for 16 years.
Family notes: Frank Frago was a very lickable man and nice looking. He loved horses and dogs. He was having a problem with his mail and started using Frago for his name, which appears on his tombstone.
Frank and M. D. Hoffman were sheep partners in Nevada. Frank was the first Azores sheepman in Frenso County. He sold wool to San Francisco at the time of the 1906 earthquake and it was a total loss. He was a Trustee of West Park School. He became a member of the Republican Central Committee for the support of Hiram Johnson. Daughter Clara says he registered Democrat for the election of Woodrow Wilson.
Frank had a doctor's visit and was told he didn't have long to live. He made funeral arrangements with Stevenson & Bean Funeral Home and went to confession to be prepared. He passed away in his sleep.

Obituary: The rosary for Adeline Gomes, 87, of Fresno will be recited tonight at 8 o'clock in Whitehurst Chapel. Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mrs. Gomes died Saturday. She was a native of Nevada, lived in Madera for many years, moved to Pismo Beach in 1946 and to Fresno in 1975.
She and her late husbank, Frank A. operated a dairy and farm in Madera from 1923 until they retired.
Mrs. Gomes was active in the Portugese community and belonged to the Cabrillo Club; UPPEC; SPRSI, and CPDES.
Surviving are two sons, F. Louis of Fresno and Alvin of Madera; two daughters, Adeline Kauffmann of Madera and Irene F. Wheeler of Arroyo Grande; two brothers, Frank Fraga of Fresno and John Frega of Cloverdale; five sisters, Clara Fischback, Lolly Gauss and Frances Sheldon, all of Fresno, Lucy Silva of Milpitas and Ann Gibson of Michigan; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Notes for Frank Armas Gomes
Frank came to the US at age 16. In 1920 he was a milker on a dairy farm in Township 3, Madera Co., CA with his wife Adaline and son Frankline. In 1930 he was a dairyman on Whites Bridge Avenue, Fresno with his wife Adaline, children Louie, Alvin, Irene, and Adaline, and boarders and milkers J. Tony Gomes Jr. (37 CA), G. Tony Gomes (33 Portugal), and P. Fred Gomes (25 Portugal).
Frank became one of the largest dairy operators in the Central San Joaquin Valley. He established his first dairy in Kearney Park a few years after his arrival in Fresno County in 1909. His herd was said to have been one of the largest in the valley during the 1930's. In 1938, Gomes moved his operation to the Lavina district of Madera County. After he retired in 1957, he continued to maintain a residence at the ranch although he spent most of the time in Pismo Beach and in traveling. Frank was one of the earliest producers of Grade A milk in the Fresno area and was an ardent advocate of dairy improvement associations. Though he was one of the first to install milking machines, he discontinued their use during the 1930's and hired milkers for his herd of 350 cars. It was his contribution to the solution of depression unemployment. He was a member of the Fresno County Cabrillo Civic Club, the Madera Council of the IDES and the Uniao Portuguesa Protectora do Estado da California. He was a charter member of the Fresno Eagles Lodge and belonged to various other organizations.
(Obituary Notice) Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. in St. John's Cathedral. Funeral Services were held for Frank A. Gomes, 70 years old, of Pismo Beach, on a Friday at 10 a.m. in St. John's Cathedral. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. The Fresno Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. A second requiem mass is scheduled for 7 a.m. Monday in St. Paul's Church in Pismo Beach. He had been under treatment for gallstones and a heart ailment. Surviving are his widow, Adeline; two sons, F. Louis Gomes, a Fresno attorney, and Alvin Gomes, a partner in and manager of the Gomes Company farm in Madera County; two daughters, Mrs. Irene Wheeler of Arroyo Grande and Mrs. Adeline Kauffman of Merced; four brothers, Manuel Gomes of San Jose, Joe Gomes of San Leandro, Alameda County, and Louis and Albino Gomes, of the Azores Islands; a sister, Mrs. Mary Gonsalves of the Azores; and nine grandchildren. He immigrated to U.S.A., California.

Obituary: Services for F. Louis Gomes, a Fresno attorney active in a dozen community organizations, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuedsay at Northwest Church. Burial will be in Belmont Memorial Park.
Mr. Gomes, 65, died Friday. A native Fresnan, he practiced law in Fresno for 41 years. He was a member of the Fresno County Bar Association, the State Bar Association and the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. He was the past chairman of the Democratic Central Committee.
Mr. Gomes was a member and past president of the Cabrillo Club. He was active in the U.P.E.C., I.D.E.S. and C.P.D.E.S. lodges. He was a member of the Native Sons of California.
Mr. Gomes graduated from Fresno State College, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He was a member of the Fresno State Alumni Association and served on the association's Trust Council. He was an active member of the Bulldog Foundation.
Mr. Gomes was past president of the Easter Seal Society, and belonged to the Fresno Trade Club and the Y's Men's Club. He was an Air Force flight instructor during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Doris; a son, Gene of Fresno, a daughter Loris Mitchell of Oakhurst; a brother, Alvin of Madera; two sisters, Irene Wheeler of Arroyo Grande and Adeline Kauffman of Montana; and five grandchildren.
Whitehurst Chapel is in charge of the arrangement.
The family requests that any remembrance be sent to the donor's favorite charity.
