Or, there may have been two Mary Knox in the area, or possibly John Robbie died soon after Alexander Robbie was born, and she remarried to William Cook. Since he recorded his own marriage and children in the parish records it is more likely that he would also have been listed by his parents. The only other known possibility is an unrecorded James Robbie born about this time in Birse, Aberdeen, son of William Robbie and Christian Mollison, but he married Margaret Skene and lived in Nigg, Kincardine.

James and family lived at first in Lauriston, Saint Cyrus, Kincardine and by 1811 at Roadside of Lauriston. In 1841 James farmed at Graystone, Saint Cyrus; at home were wife Agnes, daughter Mary, a teacher, and Susan May, a field servant born 1826/7 in Kincardineshire. In 1851 James occupied 5 acres at Greystone with his daughter Mary and her husband Kenneth McRae, occupier of 17 acres, their son James, and two servants.

In 1880 John was a dry goods clerk living at 37 South Union Street, Pawtucket, Providence Co., RI (page 146) with his wife Margaret, son George, father-in-law Adam Purves, a clerk in his dry-goods store, and Alande Drummond, a clerk in his dry-goods store, age 23 from Scotland. John came to Manchester, Hillsborough Co., NH in 1881. In 1882 he was a partner in Harley, Robbie, & Vadnies at 866 Elm and lived at 244 Manchester. He began the New York Department Store in partnership with Daniel Harley, located at 866-872 Elm Street. It was one of the largest stores in the town and state. In 1890 John lived at 226 Laurel Street, Manchester.

John became a naturalized U.S. citizen on 1 Nov 1886 at the U.S. District Court in Manchester, NH. Witnesses were Fred McAllister and Edward H. Bickford, both of Manchester.

From 1890 to 1892 John was a partner in Harley & Robbie, dry goods merchants at 866-872 Elm, Manchester, NH. In 1893 he had separated from Daniel Harley and operated the John Robbie Co. at 866 Elm. In 1893 the John Robbie Company in Manchester suffered a $40,000.00 loss by fire. The creditors of the John Robbie Company filed in Feb 1897 for unpaid expenses.

On Monday, Dec. 4 [1893], fire was discovered at 10.39 PM in the John Robbie Co.'s dry goods store in Ferren's building. The total damage was $43,490.75. The insurance paid amounted to $35,069 98.

John moved to Denver, CO in 1900 where he mined ore and resided at 1269 Evans Street, Denver, Arapahoe Co., 10th Precinct (page 153) with Margrate and children George A., Albert H., Jeannie F., Effie M., and Bertha. They reported having 9 children with 5 living.

A CAPITOL HILL FIRE - The residence of John Robbie damaged by smoke and water. About midnight fire was discovered in the residence of John Robbie, 1616 Clarkson Street. No one was in the house at the time and a passer-by saw smoke and sent in the alarm. When the engines arrived there was much smoke and little flames. The doors were broken in and the fire extinguished. The furnishings were ruined by water and smoke. The members of the family knew nothing of the fire until they returned from downtown. The insurance will not cover the loss. The origin of the fire is not known.

The death record of his wife Margaret reports her as a widow, but the WWII Draft Registration card for son Albert in 1918 lists him as the closest relative living in Broomfield, CO. In 1920 John Robbie (65 Scotland) was a laborer for the steam railroad lodging in Semper, Jefferson Co., CO; he reported entering the US in 1869 and became a naturalized citizen in 1876.

The ceremony was performed by Rev. Joseph Baker, a Presbyterian clergyman of South Boston.

The 1900 census lists Margaret's birth as July 1851. She reported entering the US in 1874.

In 1910 Margaret was a dressmaker residing at 1431 Scoma Street, Denver with her daughters Effie and Bertha; she reported being married and not a widow. Margaret was a widow when she died in 1916, living at 848 S. Emerson, Denver from Oct 1915, the home of Edwin and Jeannie Doig (her daughter).

In 1910 he was retired and living at 118 Centre Street, East Longmeadow with his wife Jane and 5 children; daughter Euphemia (saleswoman in a department store) lived nearby at 119 Prospect Street, East Longmeadow with Helen H. Vinin.

In 1920 Jane and children Jeannie, Euphemia, John, and George lived at 194 Central, Springfield, Hampton Co., MA.

George was naturalized a U.S. citizen on 17 Feb 1906 at the Police Court, Springfield, Hampden County, MA. At the time he lived in East Longmeadow.

George Robbie, 60, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his home in East Longmeadow. Mr. Robbie was an uncle of Kenneth Robbie, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. in this city. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and came to this country 23 years ago, settling in East Longmeadow, where he had been employed as a stonecutter. He leaves a widow and 6 children, the misses Jennie, Effie, and Helen Robbie, and John, James, and George Robbie Jr. Miss Jeannie Robbie is employed at the Y.M.C.A. headquarters in this city and her sister Helen is taking a course at the nurses' training school at the University of Pennsylvania. Miss Effie and the three sons live in East Longmeadow. Besides his children, Mr. Robbie leaves a sister, Mrs. Helen Purvis [Pendry], who lives in England, and two nephews, Secretary Robbie of the Y.M.C.A. and James Robbie of East Longmeadow. The funeral will be held at the home Monday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. T. S. Wilder, Pastor of the Congregational Church in East Longmeadow, officiating. Burial will be in East Longmeadow.

John came left Liverpool on the ship "Campainia" and came to America on 10 Jan 1909. He was naturalized a US Citizen on 28 May 1917 in Boston, MA. In 1930 he was a sign printer at 169 Wolcott Terrace, Saugus, Essex Co., MA with wife Helen and 4 children. In 1940 he was a sign writer for a bottling company on Wolcott Terrace with Helen and 3 younger children.

Helen came to America in 1913. She applied for a passport for her and her daughter to visit England in 1920.
